Wolf Hook Shield - Embroidered Back Patch

The Wolfsangel ("wolf-hook") is term for certain heraldic charges. Although the symbol is not historically part of any runic alphabet, early variations were comparable to the Eihwaz rune of Nordic mysticism, which were said to have magical qualities for trapping wolves, or for warding off wolves. In the 13th century it was adopted as an emblem of the German peasants’ revolt, and thus forth was regarded as symbolic of liberty and independence. During the second world war Germany used it in various forms throughout the administration and military, notably the Das Reich division. Today the symbol is still found in a number of municipal coats of arms in Germany, and is also found as a in medieval stonework.
