History:
In military operations, reconnaissance is the exploration outside an area occupied by friendly forces to gain information about natural features and enemy presence. The German M35 Map case was issued to designated personnel such as unit commanders, messengers, and observers. The case design was based on the Weimar era, Reichsheer pattern but with minor variations. The early pattern cases continued to be manufactured throughout the war, some changes were made in 1936 and 1938 introducing a modified variant with an additional small front pocket was added in 1938. German army maps were generally named and numbered and were issued as required. The cases were issued with maps, protective sleeves, as well as writing implements and measuring tools such as a compass, ruler, paper, pens and pencils.
